This privacy policy explains how Meridian Software Development ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, stores, and shares your information when you use the Meridian app ("Meridian", "the app"). By creating an account or using the app, you consent to the practices described in this policy.

INFORMATION WE COLLECT
Account Information
When you create a Meridian account, we collect:
Email address
Display name and username
Profile image (if provided)
If you sign in with a third-party service (Google or Apple), we receive your email address, display name, and profile image from that provider.
User-Generated Content
Meridian allows you to create and share content. We collect and store the data you provide, including:
Campsites — name, description, precise location (latitude and longitude coordinates), locality, access difficulty, capacity, facilities, camp type, and uploaded photos
Tracks — GPS coordinates recorded during track recording, distance, elevation, duration, difficulty grade, and hazard markers placed along the route
Photos — images you upload from your device's photo library, associated with campsites or tracks
Social interactions — follow requests, shared content, and privacy settings you choose for your content
Location Data
Meridian uses your device's location services in the following ways:
Foreground location — to show your position on the map and enable features like campsite creation and weather forecasts
Background location — when you actively record a track, Meridian continues collecting GPS coordinates while the app is in the background. This only occurs during active track recording sessions that you start manually. A blue status bar indicator is displayed while background recording is active.
Campsite and track coordinates — precise coordinates you assign to campsites or record during tracks are stored as part of your content
You can disable location services for Meridian in your device settings at any time, though some features will not function without it.
Automatically Collected Data
As you use the app, we automatically collect:
Analytics data — screen views, feature usage, and interaction events to help us understand how the app is used and where to improve
Crash reports — device model, OS version, app state, and activity logs leading up to a crash, used to diagnose and fix bugs
Performance data — screen load times and network request metrics to help us optimise app performance
Offline map downloads — metadata about map regions you download for offline use (region boundaries and storage size), stored locally on your device
Data We Do Not Collect
We do not collect biometric data
We do not collect payment or financial information directly — all purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store
We do not track your location when you are not using the app, except during active track recording sessions you have explicitly started
HOW WE USE YOUR DATA
We use your data to:
Provide core app features — store your campsites, tracks, and profile data; enable sharing and discovery of content; synchronise data across your devices
Deliver location-based services — show your position on the map, provide weather forecasts for campsite locations, display mobile reception coverage, and record GPS tracks
Improve the app — analyse usage patterns and crash reports to fix bugs, improve performance, and guide feature development
Communicate with you — send essential service communications (e.g., account verification). We do not send marketing emails unless you opt in.

SHARING AND DISCLOSURE
We may share your data in the following circumstances:
Other users — content you share (campsites, tracks, profile information) is visible to other users based on the privacy level you set: private (only you), followers (users you approve), or public (all users). Public content may be cached or indexed by search engines.
Service providers — we share data with the third-party services listed above, solely to operate and improve the app
Legal requirements — we may disclose your data to comply with applicable law, legal processes, or enforceable government requests
Business transfers — if Meridian Software Development is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, your data may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any such change.
We do not sell your personal data to third parties.
DATA STORAGE AND SECURITY
Your data is stored using:
Local storage (on-device) — campsites, tracks, photos, and offline maps are stored locally on your device using CoreData and the device file system. This enables offline access.
Cloud storage — account data, shared content, and photos are stored in Firebase (Google Cloud) servers. Data may be stored in data centres outside your home country, including in the United States.
We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and secure authentication. However, no method of electronic storage or internet transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
DATA RETENTION
Account data — retained for as long as your account is active
User-generated content — retained until you delete it or delete your account
Analytics and crash data — retained in aggregate form for up to 14 months for analytics and 90 days for crash reports (as per Firebase defaults)
Locally stored data — remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app
After account deletion, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
YOUR RIGHTS
All Users
You can:
Access your data — view your campsites, tracks, and profile information within the app at any time
Update your data — edit your profile, campsites, and tracks directly in the app
Delete your data — delete individual campsites, tracks, or photos within the app. To delete your entire account and all associated data, contact us at support@meridiandevelopment.au
Control sharing — adjust privacy settings on your content at any time (private, followers, or public)
Disable location — revoke location permissions in your device settings
Australian Users
If you are located in Australia, your personal information is handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). You have the right to access and correct your personal information, and to make a complaint if you believe we have breached the APPs. Complaints can be directed to us at support@meridiandevelopment.au or to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at www.oaic.gov.au.
European Economic Area and United Kingdom Users
If you are located in the EEA or UK, the following applies under the GDPR and UK GDPR:

CHILDREN

The app may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these external sites. We encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing any personal data.
